Painting in the Arboretum

I have really enjoyed painting in the J.C. Raulston  arboretum in Raleigh, NC  this spring - as well as painting a series of paintings from a recent photo shoot with a model, my youngest daughter, Camille.  It will take some time to finish all the paintings I have started of this shoot.  Some are really large with vistas of the garden behind the model.  We chose a really beautiful day, and the light was almost perfect!  I feel so fortunate to be able to not only enjoy the beautiful gardens there - but continue enjoying it as I paint.

I'll be searching for a venue to show these paintings in an exhibition when they are completed!  Any takers - please let me know!  They will all be for sale.

My new venture into Pet Portraits

in progress, Sophie
I've recently begun a new venture - painting pet portraits !  I have a Facebook page dedicated to helping  raise donations for animal shelters - non profit organizations and it is called Pet Portrait Parlor.

There are so many animals surrendered, dropped off, abandoned who find their way into local shelters, or picked up by animal control.  There is a huge network of volunteer groups who rescue, foster and find new homes for these animals as quickly as they can - because if they are not taken out of the shelters as soon as possible - we all know what their fate is - the gas chamber!

I know that I grew up hearing about the dreaded "Dog Pound" and it was just known as the place where strays are put to death.  Well, our generation is trying to stop the unkind, unnecessary deaths of innocent animals who were pets or born into the world unwanted and abandoned at the shelter - by finding them a forever home where they are loved and wanted.  It is an uphill battle.  Many animals need vet care as they enter the shelter and that takes MONEY.  Many need shots, worming and feeding special foods.

Each rescue organization needs help to keep the animals, network with other rescue groups in the state, pay for food and vet care and travel to transport animals when needed.  Many times these organizations ferry animals at the last minute from a shelter where the animal is about to be euthanized - saving it's life at the last minute.

My goal is to donate 1/2 of the fee for a pet portrait to the Rescue organization or Shelter of the patron's choice.  This is a way for the patron and myself to give and help a needy animal shelter!

Here is the latest portrait I am working on.  Brooklyn is the proud fur child of Tim Clarke, Raleigh NC.  Tim has had quite a history with Brooklyn, his much loved pet.  Brooklyn has come through a hospital stay at the NC Veterinary School. He had a blockage in his intestines and emergency surgery saved his life.  It was very expensive but of course, Tim would have paid anything he could to save Brooklyn.  As a result of the surgery and a long recovery, Brooklyn has sprung back to his old self.  It was touch and go for awhile but he was strong and survived.  Tim already loves the portrait which is in progress and can't wait to see it finished.  I can't wait either!  What a beautiful dog!

These portrait s are painted in oil and right now I am offering 2 sizes.

5x7 - $80.00

8x10- $110.00
in progress, Scarlett

To  have a portrait of your pet painted - contact me by email:  denisedh22@yahoo.com and I will get back with you within a day.  Right now I am delivering the paintings within a month - possibly a shorter amount of time depending on drying of the oils.  I will need at least 2 good photos to paint from taken by you, which can be emailed to me or snail mailed.

Here is Brooklyn in progress!
